Throughout the
year there are several celebrations and festivities of both a
civil and religious nature that take place.
On the 6th January
the Sacred Blessing of Water, as carried out in the
Greco-Byzantine faith, takes place in the town’s main square.
In February, they is a ceremony
to commemorate the deceased, and in the parish church they serve
boiled rice to the congregation as an offering to their deceased
parties.
During the Holy Week of the
Easter period, there are various religious celebrations that
last right through to Holy Saturday.
The most significant celebration for the town’s people, is that
of Saint Atanasio held in May.
The towns festivities are announced using a small,
brightly coloured hot-air balloon.
Mid-May is when the Italo-Albanian
Spring begins and this includes various folk gatherings of the
Arbereshe minority.
For some years now, the Administrative Council has been
organising the publicity and events in the summer months for the
‘Estate Sofiota’ meaning the ‘Sofiota
Summer’. These include concerts and traditional
cultural events. For over ten years the cultural association
known as ‘Radio Epiro’, has been organising a well-known event
named ‘Emigration Song’.
This is a celebration of alternative music styles, theatrical
appearances and dance in collaboration with foreign artists. |
