On the 6th January the Sacred Blessing of Water, as carried out in the Greco-Byzantine faith, takes place in the town’s main square. In February, they is a ceremony to commemorate the deceased, and in the parish church they serve boiled rice to the congregation as an offering to their deceased parties.
During the Holy Week of the Easter period, there are various religious celebrations that last right through to Holy Saturday.
The most significant celebration for the town’s people, is that of Saint Atanasio held in May. The towns festivities are announced using a small, brightly coloured hot-air balloon. Mid-May is when the Italo-Albanian Spring begins and this includes various folk gatherings of the Arbereshe minority.
For some years now, the Administrative Council has been organising the publicity and events in the summer months for the ‘Estate Sofiota’ meaning the ‘Sofiota Summer’. These include concerts and traditional cultural events. For over ten years the cultural association known as ‘Radio Epiro’, has been organising a well-known event named ‘Emigration Song’. This is a celebration of alternative music styles, theatrical appearances and dance in collaboration with foreign artists.
